Why it adds up, what to check first, and which countries take a European machine with almost no changes.
Every year thousands of industrial machines come onto the European market with half their working life still ahead of them. They are not sold because they are worn out: they are sold because the plant changed product, because the group reorganised production, because a new line made the old one slower rather than worse.
For a buyer in Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Peru or Argentina that market is a concrete opportunity: equipment that is out of reach new at home can be bought in Europe for a fraction, with reasonable hours and with paperwork. This guide explains when that works and when it does not.
Three things, and none of them is the country of origin by itself. The first is maintenance culture: preventive maintenance is standard practice in European industry and usually documented, so asking for a machine's service history and actually receiving one is normal.
The second is traceability: serial number, real year, manual, and on post-1995 equipment the conformity documentation. The third is volume: there is so much supply that you can choose, compare and wait for the right machine instead of settling for the one that happens to be available.
None of this means every European machine is fine. It means there is something to verify it with before you pay, which is what really matters when you are buying from nine thousand kilometres away.
The commonest mistake is comparing the price of the machine in Europe with the local price and stopping there. The real sum has five lines: the machine, dismantling and loading at origin, sea freight and insurance, duties and taxes at destination, and adaptation and installation in your plant.
That last line is the one most often forgotten and the one that varies most. It can be close to nothing, or it can be a third of the price of the machine. Before negotiating, have a rough figure for all five, not for one.
When the sum works, it usually works comfortably: the equipment lands installed for well below what it would cost new. When it does not, it is almost always for one of two reasons: transport badly estimated, or electrical adaptation underestimated.
Europe runs at 50 Hz, with 230 V single-phase and 400 V three-phase. Latin America is split, and that split changes the whole conversation.
Countries at 50 Hz, where a European machine drops almost straight in: Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay, all at 220 V single-phase and 380 V three-phase; and Bolivia at 230 and 400 V. The gap between 380 and 400 V sits inside the usual tolerance of most industrial equipment, and the frequency is identical. In these countries, buying in Europe is technically about as close as it gets to buying at home.
Countries at 60 Hz, where it has to be studied first: Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela and Central America. Here a transformer is not enough: frequency changes the speed of asynchronous motors, and that can be irrelevant, fixable with drives, or a genuine problem, depending on the machine.
It is a difference to settle on the first call, not after the offer.
Before falling for a machine, check whether the manufacturer has representation in your country or a neighbouring one. The big names in machining, bottling and power generation generally have a network in Latin America; smaller or regional European brands sometimes do not.
It is not an automatic no: there are very reliable machines from brands with no local presence that run for decades on generic parts. But it changes the calculation, and it is worth asking about lead time on a critical spare before buying, not the first time one fails.
Always ask, in writing before closing: a legible photograph of the nameplate, the instruction manual, electrical drawings, the maintenance history where one exists, and the conformity documentation. Electrical drawings are the most commonly forgotten and the ones you will need most the day something has to be fixed far from the manufacturer.
Bear in mind that CE marking is a requirement of the European market, not an international certificate. In your country the machine will have to meet local rules, and that may call for additional checks. Well-documented equipment helps a great deal, but it does not replace that step.
The order matters, and it is always the same. First define properly what you need: process, capacity, the space available in your plant, and the voltage and frequency of your installation. Then search, and when a candidate appears ask for documentation and video of it running.
Then, before any substantial payment, comes the inspection: someone you trust, in Europe, who sees the machine working and signs a report. Only then do you agree a price, set the incoterm and arrange transport. Paying before inspecting is the most expensive way there is to save time.
