The counter is one figure. Real wear is read somewhere else, and almost none of it appears in the advert.
“Low hours.” It is the line in half the used machinery adverts and the one that tells you least. Two machines with the same hours can be in opposite condition, because what wears a machine out is not the time it spent switched on: it is how that time was spent.
A machining centre with 12,000 hours of production aluminium and maintenance up to date is in better shape than one with 6,000 hours cutting hard steel without proper coolant. The number is the same kind of figure; the machine is not.
Most equipment carries several counters: machine powered on, spindle or cycle hours under load, number of starts and, on process equipment, units produced. The one quoted in the advert is usually the most flattering. The one that matters is the one under load.
Always ask which counter is being quoted, and ask for a photograph of the full counter screen, not a crop. If the machine has a numerical control, that screen exists and pulling it up takes less than a minute.
It depends on the manufacturer and the control. On plenty of machines the user counters are zeroed easily; the control's internal counters, by contrast, are usually protected and only the official service department can read them. That is where real verification lives.
With the serial number, a call to the official service department can confirm recorded hours, accumulated alarms and work carried out. They will not always tell you, but when they do, the price conversation changes completely.
“How many hours does it have?” has an easy, non-committal answer. These do not: who did the maintenance and how often? Are there work records? What has been replaced in the last two years, and why? What was the most expensive breakdown? Why is it being sold?
A seller who looks after the machine answers these in detail and with paperwork. One who does not changes the subject. That reaction is as good a reading as a dial indicator.
Seeing the machine switched on is not a test. A test is seeing it do its job: full cycle, under load, with real material and for long enough to reach working temperature. Many faults only show up once the machine warms up.
Ask as well for a precision program to be run if it is a machining centre, for the resulting parts to be measured, and for the axes to be travelled over their full range. If the seller objects to a test under load, you have your answer before spending on a survey.
There are good machines without a single document: company closures, inherited equipment, second or third-hand sales. Missing history does not disqualify a machine, but it does move the risk onto the buyer, and that has to show in the price.
In that situation an independent inspection stops being optional. A technician from the sector picks up in one morning what no advert will tell you, and the report is also a negotiating tool: a documented defect is an argument, not a suspicion.
