Central America is a narrow strip with two oceans, six countries and short land borders. That changes the logic of transport completely: here the question is not just “which port does it arrive at?” but “which port should it arrive at?”, because the port nearest your plant may be in another country.
This guide sets out the real options and what changes with each one.
Regular services from Europe to Central America mostly work by transhipment: the container crosses the Atlantic on a large vessel, is discharged at a connecting port and continues on a smaller ship to the final port.
The natural hub is Panama. The Colón complex on the Caribbean side — Manzanillo, Cristobal, Colon Container Terminal — and Balboa on the Pacific are transhipment centres, not consumption markets: the vast majority of containers passing through them never enter Panama, they simply change ship. For you that means two things: there are frequent connections to anywhere in the region, and there is an extra leg where the cargo gets handled.
Transhipment is not a bad thing. It is normal and it is what makes serving the whole region viable. But it adds days to the transit and it adds one more handling, which is exactly where knocks happen. If the machine is delicate, the packing and bracing are sized for that.

The practical rule: ocean freight to one port or another usually differs little; what really moves the numbers is the inland transport from the port to your plant, especially if the machine is heavy or out of gauge. That leg is quoted before choosing the port, not after.
This is the Central American peculiarity. A plant in San Salvador can receive through Acajutla, but also through Puerto Cortés with a road leg. A plant in western Guatemala may have a Honduran port closer than a Guatemalan one.
When the machine lands in one country and is cleared in another, the intermediate leg travels under international customs transit, on a DUCA-T, without being cleared in the country of landing. It is a routine, well-established procedure in the region, but it has to be planned for: it requires a carrier authorised for transit and an agent at each end.
It is worth costing both routes. The difference between coming in through the “logical” port and through the convenient one can be days and a fair amount of money.
The choice depends on the machine's real dimensions, not the catalogue ones:
Before anything can be quoted you need four solid figures: length, width, height and real weight, with the machine dismantled as it will travel. A figure estimated “from memory” is the most common reason a quotation falls apart halfway through.
From the European side we prepare what your forwarder needs in order to quote seriously: real dimensions and weight of the machine as it will travel, photographs of the dismantling, technical documentation, and a commercial invoice with the equipment properly identified. We coordinate loading at origin with the seller and the collection date with your operator.
