Every buyer's first objection, and how to test whether it is real before you sign.
“And if it breaks, who fixes it?” It is the first objection that comes up when a Latin American buyer considers bringing in a European machine, and it is a fair one. It is also, almost always, more manageable than it looks — provided you answer it before you buy rather than after.
This guide is not going to tell you there is no problem. It is going to tell you where the problem actually sits, which is not where most people think.
When someone says “spare parts” they are mixing three very different things, and it pays to separate them, because each one is solved differently.
Commercial components. Bearings, electric motors, drives, pneumatic cylinders, valves, sensors, belts, linear guides. These account for most of what fails on a machine, and the builder almost never makes them: it buys them from industrial suppliers who have distribution across practically all of Latin America. A bearing that fails on a German lathe is replaced with the same bearing you can buy in your own city. Here, honestly, the problem does not exist.
Manufacturer-specific parts. Housings, machined shafts, heads, moulds, proprietary transmission elements. Here you do depend on the builder, or on a workshop able to copy them. The relevant question is not whether the manufacturer still exists, but whether it still supports that model.
Wear parts. Blades, jaws, rollers, liners, seals. These can almost always be made locally from a drawing or with the old part as a pattern. In many countries in the region this is routine, and cheaper than importing.
If a used European machine is going to cause you serious grief, it will most likely be through the electronics, not the mechanics. The mechanical side of a well-built machine lasts decades. The CNC, the PLC or the operator panel does not: automation manufacturers declare their ranges obsolete on a cycle, and once a series reaches end of support, the part is only available second-hand or refurbished.
This does not mean a machine with an old control is a bad buy. It means you look at it beforehand. An obsolete control on a mechanically sound machine is a clear candidate for a retrofit: the control system is replaced with a current one and the machine gets twenty more years of life and catalogue spare parts. It is a known investment, it can be quoted and decided with numbers — but better decided by you, with the quote in hand, than discovered when the screen dies.
Almost all of this check is done with two details found on the nameplate: exact model and serial number. With those in hand:
It is an afternoon's work and it changes your negotiating position completely. If the manufacturer answers that the model is still alive, you buy with peace of mind. If it answers that the model was discontinued ten years ago, you know you need to price in a retrofit or a batch of critical spares.
The other half of the question is service. The real options, from most to least convenient:
The most sensible practice, and the one fewest people follow: negotiate with the seller so that the machine leaves with the critical spares already sitting in their store. A plant that is closing or renewing equipment almost always has a shelf of parts for that machine, and that shelf is usually worth very little in the negotiation and an enormous amount when the machine is down ten thousand kilometres away.
The same goes for documentation: manuals, wiring diagrams, parts lists, PLC programs. Asking for it after the plant has closed is usually impossible. Asking beforehand costs nothing.
